A catheter, preferably a urinary catheter, comprises a shaft 1 having a distal end provided with a drainage opening 7 communicating with a drainage lumen (8, Fig 1) provided in the shaft 1, and terminating in a tip (4, Fig 1). A balloon 23 is further located at the distal end of the shaft 1, the balloon 23 comprising a first region secured to the shaft, a second region secured to the shaft and an elastic-walled conduit extending between the first region and the second region and over the tip. The application also teaches a method of manufacturing a catheter, the method comprising providing a shaft having a distal end provided with both drainage and inflation openings each communicating with a lumen within the shaft and terminating in a tip. The method also comprises providing an elastic-walled conduit having an access opening to the interior thereof, securing a wall of the conduit to the shaft around the inflation opening and introducing a tool through the access opening to pierce the wall of the conduit at the location of the inflation opening.
