PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decreasing inflammation and stress in a mammal.SOLUTION: The method comprises administration to a mammal of a composition comprising a glucose anti-metabolite. The composition comprises sufficient amounts of the glucose anti-metabolite to lower the level of a C-reactive protein in the blood of the mammal subsequent to the administration of the glucose anti-metabolite. In a method, the glucose anti-metabolite is selected from among 2-deoxy-D-glucose, 5-thio-D-glucose, anhydrosugar, mannoheptulose and the like, and combinations thereof.
