An animal identification system including a race 1 which includes a pair of opposed walls 3, 4 between which, in use, animals pass, and a plurality of ID readers 5, 8, 9, 10 positioned to read animal ID devices borne by animals passing along the path. The pair of opposed walls defining one or more undulations or direction changes of the walls which cause the animals to move within the width of the race. The movement within the race is designed to bring the animals closer to the ID readers and increase the changes of the an ID device to be successfully read while the animal is passing through the race.
