An aesthetic rice plant suitable for ornamental use which has reddish purple leaves, in particular, reddish purple or red leaves. A rice plant, which has genes capable of expressing anthocyan color development at the C, A and P1 loci, is crossed with another rice plant having a chlorophyll deficient gene to construct a rice plant having reddish purple or red leaves. These rice leaves have a vivid or dark reddish purple or red color having a hue of from 5RP to 10RP, a lightness of from 3 to 5 and a chroma of from 6 to 10 when expressed in accordance with the Munsell color system specified in JIS Z8721, preferably a vivid reddish purple color of a hue of 7.5RP, a lightness of 5 and a chroma of 10.
