The present invention provides methods of specifically targeting compounds tocells overexpressing matrix metalloproteinases, plasminogen activators, orplasminogen activator receptors, by administering a compound and a mutantprotective antigen protein comprising a matrix metalloproteinase or aplasminogen activator-recognized cleavage site in place of the nativeprotective antigen furin-recognized cleavage site, wherein the mutantprotective antigen is cleaved by a matrix metalloproteinase or a plasminogenactivator overexpressed by the cell, thereby translocating into the cell acompound comprising a lethal factor polypeptide comprising a protectiveantigen binding site.
