PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide microemulsions containing essential oils for cosmetic and pharmaceutical use that are biocompatible, nontoxic to environments and excellent in thermodynamic stability, optical transparency and independence on wide range of temperature.SOLUTION: A microemulsion as one embodiment comprises (a) 1-20 wt.% of a sugar-based surfactant selected from a group consisting of a sucrose ester alone and a combination of a sucrose ester and an alkyl polyglucoside, (b) 1-10 wt.% of a polyhydric alcohol, (c) 0.5-10 wt.% of an essential oil selected from a group consisting of lavender oil, tea tree oil, green tea oil, rosemary oil, cardamom oil, and a mixture of these, and (d) water.
