Disclosed is the use of the proteins Ndfipl (formally N4WBP5) or Nedd4 or a nucleic acid molecule encoding Ndfipl or Nedd4 in the manufacture of a medicament in the treatment of a subject prior to, during or following a stroke. Further disclosed is a method for determining the presence of a stroke event in a subject said method comprising determining the levels of Ndfipl or Ndfipl-expression or Ndfipl-Nedd4 interaction: in an in vitro sample from the subject wherein an increase in levels or expression relative to a threshold level determined prior to a stroke event is indicative of progression of the stroke event.
