ABSTRACT - 593932 The disclosure relates to a topical composition comprising: (a) one or more ultraviolet radiation (UVR) filtering agents selected from the group consisting of ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation filtering agents avobenzone, diethylamino hydroxyl hexyl benzoate, meradimate and ecamsule and (b) at least one UVR filtering agent selected from the group consisting of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation filtering agents octocrylene, oxybenzone, octisalate, benzophenone-4 and homosalate, wherein the UVR filtering agents are present in the composition in an amount effective to filter UVA when the composition is applied to the skin of an animal exposed to UVA and wherein the composition is adapted to allow passage of sufficient radiation in approximately 295 to 315 nm range to permit production of an effective amount of vitamin D when the composition is applied to the skin of an animal exposed to UVB. The composition is particularly used in sunscreens promoting on the one hand vitamin D3 production, on the other hand protecting the skin against harmful ultraviolet radiation. Also described are compositions suitable for providing protection against ultraviolet radiation containing one or more active ultraviolet radiation absorber through which ultraviolet B radiation is permitted to enter the skin in an amount sufficient for the body to produce a healthful and disease-opposing quantity of vitamin D3 and chemical precursors thereof, wherein the ultraviolet radiation absorber may be selected from the group consisting of Benzophenone, 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone, 2,2,4,4-Tetrahydroxybenzophenone, 2,2- Dihydroxy- 4,4-dimethoxybenzophenone, 2,2-Dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, 2- Hydroxy-4-(Octyloxy)Benzophenone, 4-Methyibenzylidene camphor, Cinoxate, Octinoxate, Diethanolamine p-methoxycinnamate, lsoamyl p-methoxycinnamate, Dibenzoylmethane, Bisoctrizole, Zinc oxide, Titanium dioxide, Cerium(IV), Ensulizole, Aminobenzoic acid, Padimate-O, Padimate-A, Glyceryl Aminobenzoate, E
