Apparatus 1 for determining respiratory information about a user comprises a plurality of thermopiles 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d arranged on a support frame having a head 4. Each thermopile has a field of view (11a, 11b, 11c, 11d, figure 3), and the thermopiles are arranged to detect a temperature gradient within a volume of interest 10. The support frame and thermopiles make no contact, in use, with the user. A processor is provided for processing one or more of said output signals to determine said respiratory information about the user. Additionally, in embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise a tracker to track positional information about the user and closed-loop feedback control system capable of moving the support frame when a user’s head moves outside the fields of view.
