A femoral stem prosthesis 10 features a proximal section 12 and a distal section 14, both of which have a medial edge 16 and a lateral edge 18. The proximal section is generally wider in a medio-lateral direction than the distal section and both the proximal section and the distal section taper inwardly in a medio-lateral direction such that an anterior-posterior thickness of the medial edge is greater than an anterior-posterior thickness of the lateral edge (see Figs 3A-3E). The geometry of the prosthesis allows for an increased range of anteversion. The anterior posterior thickness of the lateral edge of the proximal section may also be less than the anterior-posterior thickness of the lateral edge of the distal section (see Fig 5). A hip joint prosthesis, and femoral implant comprising the femoral stem prosthesis and an acetabular cup and femoral head prosthesis, respectively, are also contemplated.
