Described herein are hydrogels with improved mechanical properties. Hydrogels are composed of two polymer networks that are covalently crosslinked to each other. Addition of multivalent cations and / or polycations to the hydrogel can further crosslink the polyphosphate network and adjust the mechanical properties of the hydrogel as needed.
