The present invention is related to a method for purifying diatomaceous earth wherein the natural colloidal structure of the material is retained, which comprises preparing a suspension of diatomaceous earth in a liquid wherein diatomaceous earth is insoluble, separating diatomaceous earth from the suspension, treating diatomaceous earth with an inorganic or organic acid, heat-treating the thus obtained product at a temperature not higher than 300°C, subjecting the product obtained to oxidative treatment and drying the purified product. The invention also relates to a product obtainable by the above-mentioned method.La presente invención se refiere a un método para purificar la tierra diatomácea en donde se retiene la estructura coloidal natural del material, el cual comprende preparar una suspensión de tierra diatomácea en un líquido en donde la tierra diatomácea es insoluble, separar la tierra diatomácea de la suspensión, tratar la tierra diatomácea con un ácido orgánico o inorgánico, termotratar de esta manera el producto obtenido a una temperatura no más de 300°C, someter el producto obtenido a tratamiento oxidativo y secar el producto purificado. La invención también se refiere a un producto obtenible por el método arriba mencionado.
