An illuminated surgical instrument is disclosed. One embodiment of the present invention comprises an illuminated vitrectomy probe. The vitrectomy probe has a cutting port disposed at a distal end of a cannula. An array of optical fibers terminates near the cutting port. The array of optical fibers is located adjacent to the cannula and encircling the cannula. The array of optical fibers can comprise two sets of fibers, one for providing illumination in a direction along a longitudinal axis of the vitrectomy probe and another for providing illumination in a direction at an angle to the longitiudinal direction of the vitrectomy probe. The light source providing light to each set of fibers can be independently controlled so as to provide illumination cooperatively or singly.Cette invention concerne un instrument chirurgical à éclairage intégré. Un mode de réalisation de la présente invention comprend une sonde de vitrectomie à éclairage intégré. La sonde de vitrectomie comporte un orifice de coupe situé à lextrémité distale dune canule. Un faisceau de fibres optiques sarrête à proximité dudit orifice de coupe. Le faisceau de fibres optiques se trouve en une position adjacente à la canule et encercle ladite canule. Il peut comprendre deux jeux de fibres, un pour éclairer dans la direction dun axe longitudinal de la sonde de vitrectomie et lautre pour éclairer dans une direction formant un certain angle par rapport à la direction longitudinale de la sonde de vitrectomie. La source lumineuse fournissant la lumière à chaque jeu de fibres peut être commandée indépendamment de manière à fournir un éclairage coopératif ou indépendant.
