Provided herein is a novel endoscope that can be a spectrally encoded endoscope (SEE) probe having a front view, a side view, or a combination of front and side views. The SEE probe comprises a light guide component, a light focusing component, and a diffraction grating component. The probe is configured to direct light, such as spectrally dispersed light, from the diffraction grating component to the sample with no intermediate reflection between the light guide component and the diffraction grating component. A triangular grating, such as a staircase grating, or a ledge grating, can be used as the grating component.
