A medical microelectrode comprises an elongate electrode bodycom-prising a tip section, a main body section and, optionally, a couplingsection. The tipsection, the main body section and, optionally, the coupling section areembedded ina first electrode matrix element, which is substantially rigid, biocompatibleandsolu-ble or biodegradable in a body fluid. Additionally the microelectrodecomprises adissolution retarding layer on the first electrode matrix element and/or asecondelec-trode matrix element disposed between the first electrode matrix elementand theelectrode. Upon dissolution or biodegradation of the first electrode matrixelement adrug comprised by the first electrode matrix element or the second electrodematrixelement is released into the tissue. Also disclosed are bundles and arrays oftheelec-trodes and their use.
