PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoacoustic image generation apparatus which can use two laser operation modes by switching them.SOLUTION: A trigger control circuit 24 outputs a laser trigger signal to a laser unit 13. A trigger controller 31 outputs a Q-SW trigger signal at an indefinite time relative to the trigger signal in a first operation mode, and also outputs a synchronization signal. In a second operation mode, a Q-SW trigger signal is output at a fixed time relative to the trigger signal. A/D conversion means 22 samples a photoacoustic signal detected by a probe 11. A sampling control circuit 25 initiates a sampling in the A/D conversion means 22 in synchronization with the synchronization signal in the first operation mode.
