Antimicrobial agents, including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), and usesthereof. Compositions and methods of usingdermaseptin-type and piscidin-type antimicrobial peptide variants thatdemonstrate activity and improved therapeutic indices againstmicrobial pathogens. The peptide compositions demonstrate the ability to notonly maintain or improve antimicrobial activity againstbacterial pathogens including Gram-negative microorganisms Acinetobacterbaumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but alsosignificantly decrease hemolytic activity against human red blood cells.Specificity determinants within the AMPs change selectivity frombroad spectrum antimicrobial activity to Gram-negative selectivity.
