A method for manufacturing an end effector (1) of a surgical device comprises providing the end effector (1) with a passive articulation joint (10) that permits control of the articulation movement of the end effector (1), and providing the end effector (1) with an articulation lock that permits retaining the passive articulation joint (10) in a stable position. Furthermore, the method comprises providing a release of the articulation lock such that the articulation lock unlocks the passive articulation joint (10) when it is actuated to permit articulation motion of the end effector (1) through the passive articulation joint (10) dependent upon external forces acting upon the end effector (1).
