In one aspect, the invention provides pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment and/or prevention of osteoarthritis in mammals, particularly humans, comprising sodium bicarbonate and calcium gluconate, and optionally comprising one or more additional components. The invention also provides methods of treating or preventing osteoarthritis by administering to a mammal, preferably via intraarticular injection, one or more compositions of the invention.
