Embodiments are directed to methods of treating acute radiation syndrome comprising administering a PIF peptide to a subject after exposure. Some embodiments describe a method of treating post-exposure acute radiation syndrome comprising transplanting bone marrow exposed to a PIF peptide prior to transplantation into a subject. Other embodiments describe methods for increasing engraftment of transplanted organs, tissues, or cells by pre-exposure of the organs, tissues, or cells to a PIF peptide.
