A method for designing and assembling an implantable medical device using an internal support structure is disclosed. This single piece support structure holds various electrical components such as communication coils and circuit boards and is further attached to the battery, thus providing a mechanically robust subassembly. The support structure also provides electrical isolation between these components and other components. In this assembly method, the subassembly can be adhered to the case of the medical device that can be implanted in the battery, and possibly in the support structure. The battery includes an insulating cover having a hole.
