PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for controlling the germination and growth of broadleaf, Cyperaceae and Poaceae weeds using compounds comprising thaxtomin, which is a bacterial secondary metabolite, as an active ingredient.SOLUTION: A synergistic herbicide composition comprises thaxtomin (4-nitroindol-3-yl-containing 2,5-dioxopiperazine), and cyhalofop as another herbicide. A method for modulating the germination and/or growth of weeds includes applying the composition in an amount effective to modulate the germination of the weeds.
