The present invention comprises the (Argo)n-angiotensin-(1-7) peptide [(Argo)n-Ang-(1-7)], in which n is 1 to 10 (SEQ ID No. 1, in which Xaa represents a variation of 1 to 10 L‑Arg amino acids), which is produced by the insertion of at least one arginine amino acid in the amino-terminal position of Ang (1-7), and also pharmaceutical compositions containing this peptide, and the use thereof for treating or preventing diseases or disturbances caused by or involving reduced nitric oxide production, non‑limiting examples of which are cardiopulmonary and hepatic pathological conditions, vasculopathies, metabolic and neural disturbances, afflictions of the genitourinary tract, muscular/skeletal, renal and cutaneous afflictions, alopecia or tumours. The peptide is capable of causing, for example, the dilation of aortic and mesenteric vessels, a reduction in mean arterial blood pressure, a reduction in body weight gain, the halting of visceral fat development, a reduction in blood and liver cholesterol levels, normalization of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance, and an anti‑proliferative effect.
