A guide system for assisting insertion of a needle into a patient's body is disclosed. The guidance system utilizes ultrasonic imaging or other suitable imaging techniques. In one embodiment, the guidance system includes an imaging device that includes a probe for generating an image of a target of an internal body part, such as a blood vessel. One or more sensors are included in the probe. The sensor senses a detectable characteristic associated with the needle, such as the magnetic field of the magnet contained in the needle. The system includes a processor that uses data relating to the sensed characteristics to determine the 3D position of the needle. The system includes a display for indicating the position of the needle.
