The purpose of the present invention is to provide a prophylactic and therapeutic agent for neurological diseases, said agent comprising as an active ingredient apolipoprotein E-containing lipoproteins or having as an action mechanism a neuroprotective system through the activation of neuroprotective molecules and the inactivation of neurodegeneration-inducing molecules that are mediated by lipoprotein receptors, and a prophylactic and therapeutic method for neurological diseases. The aforesaid apolipoprotein E-containing lipoproteins and/or neuroprotective system through, as the action mechanism, the activation of neuroprotective molecules and the inactivation of neurodegeneration-inducing molecules that are mediated by lipoprotein receptors have prophylactic and therapeutic effects of, for example, inhibiting nerve cell apoptosis, on neurological diseases such as various neurodegenerative diseases accompanied by nerve cell apoptosis as the essential condition. Therefore, the present invention provides a prophylactic and therapeutic agent for neurological diseases, said agent comprising apolipoprotein E-containing lipoproteins and/or having an action mechanism through the activation of neuroprotective molecules and the inactivation of neurodegeneration-inducing molecules that are mediated by lipoprotein receptors, and a prophylactic and therapeutic method for neurological diseases.
