To do this, a study is made of the serum level of neopterin. Level of neopterin above 10 nmol/l indicates a bacterial or viral intestinal infection. Level of neopterin above 25 nmol/l increases the probability of bacterial diarrhea development by a factor of 3.1. At neopterin values from 10.49 to 16.2 nmol/l, a viral enteric infection is diagnosed.
