The present invention relates to a composition which contains a mugwort (Artemisia annua) extract, artemisinin, or dihydroartemisinin as an active ingredient and used for the prevention and treatment of obesity. The mugwort extract, artemisinin, or dihydroartemisinin can promote the inhibitory activity of &alpha；-glucosidase and &alpha；-amylase, has no cytotoxicity, and suppress the differentiation of adipocytes to fat precursor cells excellently. According to the present invention, the mugwort extract has the excellent effects including not causing a toxic liver in animal models, reducing the weight and fat weight of each area, and increasing the concentration of HDL- cholesterol in the blood, thereby utilized in the prevention and treatment of obesity.본 발명은 개똥쑥 추출물, 아테미시닌 또는 디히드로아테미시닌을 유효성분으로 포함하는 비만의 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 개똥쑥 추출물, 아테미시닌 또는 디히드로아테미시닌은 α-글루코시다제(glucosidase) 및 α-아밀라아제(amylase)의 저해 활성을 촉진하고, 세포 독성이 없으며, 지방전구세포의 지방세포로의 분화를 억제하는 우수한 효과를 가지고 있다. 또한, 본 발명에 따른 개똥쑥 추출물은 비만 동물모델에서 간 독성을 일으키지 않으며, 체중 및 부위별 지방무게를 감소시키고, 혈중 HDL-콜레스테롤의 농도를 증가시키는 우수한 효과를 가지고 있어, 비만의 예방 또는 치료에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
