A needle 26 is provided that can be used as an introducer needle to position or insert a catheter 58 into a patient, such as to introduce or aspirate a fluid into a patient or to place a peripheral IV catheter. Needle 26 may be an introducer needle that extends from the distal end of the catheter during insertion. The needle 26 has an insertion tip with a configuration for assisting penetration into the vein 60 with a reduced incidence that injuries or accidentally passes through the side wall of the vein. The needle tip 46 may be formed with a curved distal end surface 54 with a sharp tip 46 spaced radially inwardly relative to the outer surface 56 of the needle 26.
