Cells derived from umbilical cord tissue for the preservation of motor neuron function in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, when cells derived from umbilical cord tissue can be isolated from human umbilical cord tissue substantially free of blood, are capable of self-renewal and expansion of the culture, they have the potential to differentiate into cells of other phenotypes, they can undergo at least 40 duplications, and they have the following characteristics: (a) express each of CD 10, CD 13, CD44, CD73, CD90 , PDGFR-alpha, PD-L2 and HLA-A, B, C； (b) do not express any of CD31, CD34, CD45, CD80, CD86, CD117, CD141, CD 178, B7-H2, HLA-G, or HLA-DR, DP, DQ； and (c) have a higher expression of interleukin-8； reticulon 1； and chemokine receptor ligand (CXC motif) ligand 3, relative to that of a human cell, which is a fibroblast, a mesenchymal stem cell, or a bone iliac crest marrow cell.Células derivadas de tejido del cordón umbilical para la preservación de la función de neurona motora en pacientes con esclerosis lateral amiotrófica, cuando las células derivadas de tejido del cordón umbilical se pueden aislar a partir de tejido de cordón umbilical humano sustancialmente libre de sangre, son capaces de autorrenovación y expansión del cultivo, tienen el potencial de diferenciarse en células de otros fenotipos, pueden someterse a al menos 40 duplicaciones, y tienen las siguientes características: (a) expresan cada uno de CD 10, CD 13, CD44, CD73, CD90, PDGFR-alfa, PD-L2 y HLA-A,B,C； (b) no expresan ninguna de CD31, CD34, CD45, CD80, CD86, CD117, CD141, CD 178, B7-H2, HLA-G, o HLA-DR, DP, DQ； y (c) tienen una mayor expresión de interleucina-8； reticulon 1； y ligando de receptor de quimiocina (motivo CXC) ligando 3, respecto a la de una célula humana, que es un fibroblasto, una célula madre mesenquimal, o una célula de médula de cresta ilíaca ósea.
