An electrode structure and a mechanism for automated or user-selected operation or compensation of the electrodes, for example to determine tissue coverage and / or prevent arcing between bottom electrodes during electrocautery is disclosed. In one embodiment, the electrocautery apparatus, comprises: a plurality of adjacent first electrodes forming a first electrode array at least one second electrode a power supply having at least two output channels each output channel being electrically coupled to respective electrodes of said first electrode array, said power supply also being electrically coupled to said at least one second electrode and means for selectively applying a voltage from each power supply channel between respective electrodes among the electrodes in the first electrode array and to said at least one second electrode, said electrodes being activated in a selected firing order that fires electrodes associated with each power supply channel concurrently and/or sequentially.
