A solid ingestible composition containing an alginate, a bicarbonate and/or carbonate and a C 2 -C 5 polyol or poly(C 2 -C 5 alkylene glycol). Preferably, the polyalkylene glycol is a polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a molecular weight of at least 6000, the alginate is sodium alginate, the bicarbonate is sodium bicarbonate and the carbonate is calcium carbonate. More preferably, the composition is in tablet form and is used in the treatment of reflux oesophagitis, gastritis), dyspepsia or peptic ulceration or for use as a sustained releasing or targeted delivery composition. Even more preferably, a process of preparing the composition using a wet granulation process and in which the ratio of polyol or polyalkylene glycol to the alginate is less than 0.25:1.
