The present invention is particularly directed to imageable, radiation-impermeable, colorable beads useful for monitoring color radiography procedures. The beads include iodine-containing compounds that are co-introduced into the polymer network of the pre-formed hydrogel beads. The beads are made by activating pre-formed hydrogel beads for nucleophilic attack followed by covalent attachment of iodinated compounds into the polymer network.
