The external endoscope light source system includes a light emitting diode for providing an optical output to an endoscope. The light is provided by an optical fiber cable for transmission to an endoscope. The optical fiber accepts a portion of the light output and provides the output as a color sensor to sense color values. The color value provides a regulator that adjusts the power for various LEDs to provide a white light output. Instead of a color sensor in the light source, the light source may receive a white balance signal from a video camera provided for the endoscope. The white balance signal changes the intensity of the light output from each LED to obtain a white light output. The camera also provides a shutter speed of the camera image sensor for the light source. Using the shutter speed, pulses or adjusts the light output only when the camera''s shutter is open.
