An implantable device for continuously monitoring vascular lumen dimensions within an inferior vein (IVC) to determine a patient's heart failure status is disclosed. The device includes an active or passive marker element that is disposed in contact with, attached to, or into a blood vessel wall to generate or reflect a signal that can determine the lumen diameter.
