PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the technique for detecting the abnormality of an absolute encoder and a signal line extending from the absolute encoder without the need of a special operational circuit of adding bits or the like.
SOLUTION: While a first signal train comprising the data bit group of two or more digits indicating the rotation angle of a detection object outputted from the absolute encoder is changed in either increasing or decreasing direction, when the bits of the lower orders are not changed while the N-th bit of the signal train is changed for two or more times, the abnormality is judged. Also, while a second signal train comprising the data bit group of two or more digits indicating the rotation amount of a detection object is changed in either increasing or decreasing direction, when the bits of the lower orders are not changed while the N-th bit of the signal train is changed for two or more times, the abnormality is judged.
