PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for repairing cardiac valves having various form abnormalities and dysfunctions.SOLUTION: A device for improving the function of a cardiac valve comprises: a support member formed from a shape memory material and a restriction member for applying a restriction action on a direction of the support member. The support member may abut against one side of the valve, conforming to the shape of the valve annular aperture while the shape memory material assumes an activated shape and the restriction member restricts the direction of the support member. The restriction member is removable for allowing the support member to change its shape in a desired direction. The restriction member may be biodegradable so as to be degraded within a patient body or may be detachable from the support member to allow withdrawal. In addition, the support member according to another embodiment presents a shape change in which a cross-sectional area of the support member increases in association with a shortening of the length of the support member.
