The composite may further include a chemical additive incorporated within the polymer matrix, the chemical additive being configured to modify one or more of acidity, degradation rate, melting point, hydrophilicity, and hydrophobicity of the polymer matrix. A method for making the composite includes mixing the osteoconductive particles with polymer material and the chemical additive to form a mixture and treating the mixture to bind the osteoconductive particles with the polymer material to create a solid unit.
