The device 8 is configured to carry out the method, by feeding a first volume of water into the capsule 1 for prewetting the at least one beverage ingredient 2, interrupting the flow of water into the capsule 1 for a predetermined waiting time, feeding a second volume of water into the capsule 1 for extracting the at least one beverage ingredient 2, opening an outlet face la of the capsule 1, and dispensing the produced beverage. According to the method and device of the present invention, the first volume of water is determined by evaluating a measurement signal 10 output by a flow meter 3.
