Embodiments of the present invention mayallow each of the surgical steps of a surgical procedure to bedefined and associated with a function of the surgical console(100) using a GUI (115). The defined surgical procedurecan then be saved and later invoked by a user of thesurgical console to conduct the surgical procedure. Whenthe saved surgical procedure is invoked representations ofthe defined surgical steps are displayed to the user using aGUI so the user can conduct the surgical procedure by navigatingthrough the representations of the surgical steps suchthat when a representation of a surgical step is selected thesurgical console is configured according to the functionalityassociated with that surgical step.
