An apparatus (200) for removing a needle shield (206) from a syringe is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a tubular member (210) for enclosing the needle shield (206) coupled to the syringe, one or more cap engagement mechanisms (218a, 218b) provided at a distal end of the tubular member (see 210, figures 2A & 2B) and configured for engagement with a cap (204) provided for covering a distal end of the syringe, and two needle shield engagement mechanisms provided at a proximal end of the tubular member (210) configured for engagement with the needle shield (206). The two needle shield engagement mechanisms project inwardly from a side wall of the proximal end of the tubular member (210). Each of the two needle shield engagement mechanisms comprise a first inclined wall that extends from the side wall of the tubular member (210). The two needle shield engagement mechanisms are configured such that when the apparatus (200) is pulled away from the syringe, the two shield engagement mechanisms exert force against the needle shield (206) to remove the needle shield (206) from the syringe.
