In various embodiments, the present invention provides tip protectors toshield the sharp needletip found on safety catheters. The present invention eliminates the use of ametal clip tipprotector and thus any possibility of lateral offset of metal clip arms,needle side-out, and metalscraping sounds typically heard during needle withdrawal. In variousembodiments, a tipprotector herein comprises a multi-piece design with axially shiftable innerand outer membersthat cooperate, wherein the inner member is sized and positioned to becompletely within theaxial extent of the outer member so that the sharp distal tip of the needlecan be fully shieldedby the inner member while the outer member can facilitate in thesecurement/release of the tipprotector to and from the catheter hub.
