A tissue retractor kit for retracting tissue opened by an incision, said tissue retractor kit including at least one base support unit (12i,412) that is a sheet-like structure having a topside (13i,413) and an underside (15i) conformable to a skin surface proximate to the incision and includes an adhesive to removably attach the underside (15i) to said skin surface. The base support unit (12i,412) forms an opening (110) that extends from the topside (13i,413) through to the underside (15i) to surround the incision, thereby providing access to the tissue surface opened by the incision beneath the opening (110), at least one securing mechanism (66,104) integrally formed with or attached or removably attachable to the topside (13i,413), at least one tissue hook (18i) having a tissue engagement portion (19i) and a mounting portion (17i) wherein the tissue engagement portion (19i) is capable of engaging at least a portion of the periphery of tissue opened by the incision and at least one retractable member (14i,414) substantially inelastic in its central longitudinal axis and flexible in at least one axis deviating from said central longitudinal axis wherein the retractable member (14i,414) receives the mounting portion (17i) of the tissue hook (18i) and is retractable away from the incision, such that the tissue engagement portion (19i) retracts tissue to which it is engaged. The securing mechanism (66,104) of the topside of the base support unit (12i,412) secures a hook or loop fastener strap and the retractable member (14i,414) which includes a hook or loop fastener strap that includes a complementary securing mechanism to be removably attached to the securing mechanism (66,104) of the topside of the base support unit (12i,412) and to secure the retracted retractable member (14i,414) to any position along the securing mechanism (66,104) of the topside (13i,413).
