This invention pertains to a polymeric composition and an antimicrobialcompositions, each comprising a superabsorbentpolymer (SAP), such as used in diapers and sanitary napkins, and peroxide. Thesuperabsorbent material can be made bythe process of treating a preformed SAP, such as a crosslinked polyacrylatesalt, with a treatment solution comprising hydrogenperoxide dissolved in water, followed by drying. The resulting superabsorbentmaterial has strong antimicrobial activity.Optionally, the treatment solution may also contain a metal salt, includingthose of zinc, zirconium, and magnesium.
