The invention provides waste management systems having ultraviolet light activated malodor control compounds and methods for activating such compounds. In a general aspect, the waste management system includes a litter box and an ultraviolet light emitting device attachable to the litter box. The litter box contains a litter having a photocatalyst that is activated by ultraviolet light, which triggers the neutralization of malodorants and the destruction of microbes that produce malodors within the litter box. The ultraviolet light emitting device can also be adaptable to receive at least one fragrance cartridge and disseminate the contents of the cartridge. The ultraviolet light emitting device can be used in conjunction with a sensor on the ultraviolet light emitting device or the litter box to determine when an animal has finished using the litter box.Linvention concerne des systèmes de gestion de déchets utilisant des composés éliminant les mauvaises odeurs activés par un rayonnement ultraviolet, et des procédés dactivation de tels composés. Dans un aspect général, le système de gestion de déchets comprend un bac à litière et un dispositif émettant un rayonnement ultraviolet, ce dispositif pouvant être fixé à le bac à litière.
