A method of sterilisation of a safety cabinet such as that used in microbiology laboratories, the method comprising heat sterilisation. The method preferably includes providing heat outside a work area 10 of the safety cabinet, which maybe in an air flow path of the safety cabinet so that hot air can be circulated through the safety cabinet. The hot air may be circulated using a fan 50 that is arranged to provide air flow during normal operation of the safety cabinet. The method preferably comprises providing a heat source (100, fig 2) at a position in the safety cabinet that is separated from a fan 50 or fan motor 60 of the safety cabinet by a predetermined distance and the air exhaust 34 may be obstructed to recirculate the hot air. The method preferably provides heat in the safety cabinet according to a predetermined sterilisation cycle and a introducing a source of water into the safety. A safety cabinet comprising a heat sterilisation system is also disclosed.
