The disclosure further provides for an immunomodulatory agent comprising itaconate, malonate, or a derivative thereof. Further, the disclosure provides for a method of reducing the extent of tissue injury in ischemia reperfusion, including cardiovascular infarction comprising administration of an immunomodulatory agent and treating psoriasis.
