The present invention relates to a composition for the herbicidal control of a plant of the genus Fallopia comprising a consortium of cells of the species Mycosphaerella polygoni-cuspidati, wherein the cells in the consortium are the same mating type. Application of a single mating type prevents the fungus from reproducing and spreading beyond the site of application. The use of the composition and a method of contacting the plant with the composition is also claimed. Preferably the consortiums are all of mating type 1 or all of mating type 2. Claimed in another embodiment is a polynucleotide primer comprising certain sequences.
