Provided is an animal retainer used for retaining an animal such as a mouse or a rabbit that serves as a specimen in fields such as medicine and pharmacology, wherein the animal retainer is capable of very easily retaining an animal without imparting stress. A cylindrical animal retainer composed of a woven or knitted fabric containing a polyurethane fiber, the animal retainer being characterized in that the woven or knitted density at both cylindrical end parts thereof is greater than the woven or knitted density of the cylindrical center part. A covering yarn in which the polyurethane fiber is covered by a polyamide fiber is preferably used in at least a portion.
