An instant lawn comprises a support mat formed from a plurality of melt-spun nylon filaments in the form of loops which are bonded together at their cross-over points. The diameter of the filaments is from 0.1-0.8 mm. A cultivation medium is contained in the mat and grass or grass seeds are rooted in this medium. The mat preferably weighs 150-500 gms per sq metre and is from 0.5- 2.5 cm thick. The mat may be backed with a thin foil or film backing foil.
