FIELD: agriculture.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of environmental monitoring. The method comprises selection in a small river or its tributary visually on the map or full-scale the site of floodplain meadow with grass cover. Then on this site along the stream of the small river or its tributary in specific areas at least three demarcated section lines are marked in the transverse direction. Along each demarcated section line at least three test sites are marked on each side of the small river or its tributary, the patterns of the indices of grass samples are determined. And the dimensions of the square test sites are taken with the placement in the specific areas of the selected site sequentially of the frame with the inner sides of at least 0.50x0.50 m, and the number of the placements of the frame in the specific areas of the selected site of the floodplain meadow is taken such that the sum of all placements of the frame, that is all virtual test sites, is on the area not less than 4 m2. Moreover, the determining of the species composition of grass is carried out on the virtual test site. On the sites inside the frame the number of species of grass is counted and entered into a table with a general list on the rows of the table of all kinds of herbal and grass plants found at least once on any virtual test site. In the columns on the numbers of virtual test sites, a unit is put in the presence of this type of herbal and grass plant, and the cell of the table is left empty in the absence of plant species in the list of species. The measurements of presence of species of grass are consistently performed in all virtual test sites. After that the units are summarized in rows and columns of the table of species composition of meadow grass and the number of virtual test sites occupied by this species of plant and the number of species of plant in each virtual test site is calculated.
